India's photovoltaic power generation accounted for a new high

According to the survey data released by India’s Central Electric Power Bureau in October this year, the share of photovoltaic power generation in India’s total power generation in the first half of fiscal year 2022 (April to September) reached a new high of 5.85%. This makes photovoltaic systems the leading renewable energy source in India, second only to large hydropower installations. After generating more electricity from photovoltaic systems than wind installations last year, they still outstrip wind installations this year.

From the perspective of photovoltaic power generation, the first half of fiscal year 2022 will grow rapidly. During the period from April 22 to September 22, the total power generation of the photovoltaic system was 48013.99 million units (MU). While in the first six months of FY2021, India’s total PV generation stood at 34,151.63 million units (MU).

Although the total power generation of photovoltaic systems in the second half (July-September) of the first half of fiscal year 2022 is lower than that in the first half (April-June). After a 15% decline in photovoltaic power generation in July, it can be seen that photovoltaic power generation continues to grow. India’s photovoltaic generation in August this year was 7428.25 million units (MU) and in September it was 8207.72 million units (MU).

Comparing the photovoltaic power generation in August and September this year, it can be seen that the chain has increased by 10%. Comparing the photovoltaic power generation in September 2022 and September 2021, it can be seen that there has been a year-on-year increase of 51%. Although India still has a long way to go to achieve the goal of adopting 500GW of renewable energy by 2030, judging from the data for the first half of fiscal year 2022, photovoltaic power generation is very impressive.

According to public data, as of October 2022, the total installed renewable energy capacity in India is 119,092.59 MW, and the total renewable energy generation capacity is 14,238.57 million units (MU). This includes electricity generation from almost all renewable sources (wind, photovoltaics, biomass, small hydro, and others).

The installed capacity and power generation data of photovoltaic systems in India in fiscal year 2021 and fiscal year 2022 are shown in the following figure:

During the period from April 22 to October 22, 2022, the total electricity generation from renewable energy in India is 124,063.88 million units (MU). During the period from April 21 to October 21, 2021, the total power generation of renewable energy in India was 104,868.02 million units (MU), a year-on-year increase of 118.30%, and photovoltaic power generation also increased by 140.57%.
