What will happen if the positive and negative poles of the solar module are connected in reverse?

When photovoltaic modules are connected to an inverter, since there is a certain distance between the components and the inverter, an extension cord needs to be added. This extension cord needs to be made on site. The correct connection method is that one side of the photovoltaic connector is a female connector and the other side is a male connector, so as to ensure that the direction of the positive and negative poles will not change. Experienced installation technicians will not make mistakes, but some novices may make the two connectors of the extension cord the same. If connected to the inverter, it will cause the positive and negative poles to be connected in reverse. So, what impact will the reverse connection of the positive and negative poles of the components have on the inverter? This depends on the number of strings of the inverter.

1. The inverter has only one string

The inverter is powered by the components. If there is only one string and the positive and negative poles are connected in reverse, the inverter cannot be started, and neither the indicator light nor the screen of the inverter will light up. However, the inverter will not be damaged. If it is corrected and then connected again, the inverter will work normally.

2. The inverter has two strings in one MPPT

If both strings are connected in reverse, the situation is the same as the above one. The inverter cannot be started, and neither the indicator light nor the screen of the inverter will light up.
If for the two strings, one is connected correctly and the other is connected in reverse, the two strings are equivalent to an internal short circuit. The short-circuit current of the components will be amplified by 15%. The fuse will not blow, the DC voltage of the inverter may be only a few volts, the inverter will not be damaged, but the components will be slowly burned out.

3. The inverter has multiple strings in one MPPT

If multiple strings are all connected in reverse at the same time, the situation is the same as the first case. The inverter cannot be started, and neither the indicator light nor the screen of the inverter will light up.

If one string is connected correctly and the other several strings are connected in reverse, or one string is connected in reverse and the other several strings are connected correctly, there will be an internal short circuit in the strings, and the current will increase by more than 2 times. If the inverter has a fuse, the fuse will blow, the circuit will be disconnected, and it will not cause a fire. After the fuse blows, the voltage at both ends of the fuse will double, causing the DC end to be over-voltage and the inverter to explode.

If the components are connected in reverse, the consequences are relatively serious. At best, the inverter will explode, and at worst, the components will catch fire. So special attention should be paid. If novices are not very proficient, they can first measure the voltage with a multimeter. Remember to use the DC voltage range. If the direction of the measured voltage is correct with respect to that of the inverter, then connect it to the inverter.
